Climate-friendly new daycare facility

The new St. Stilla daycare centre in Wolframs-Eschenbach, Bavaria, is visually stimulating, energy-efficient and offers plenty of space for children and carers.

Architekturbüro ING+ARCH built the modern, two-storey new building with 1,851 square metres of usable space commissioned by the Middle Franconian town. As many architecturally impressive buildings are also located in the old town, those responsible opted for an organic structure that blends into the surroundings with deconstructivist elements.

Energy concept and resource-saving materials

As part of the energy concept created by the architectural firm, it is a passive house with an 80 kWp photovoltaic system. In combination with a highly heat-insulated building envelope and efficient system technology including ventilation system with heat recovery, more energy is generated than is consumed.

The planners also placed great importance on sustainability aspects and climate friendliness with regard to the materials used and mostly used renewable or mineral building materials. The pitched roofs are insulated with cellulose and soft wood fibre boards. Mineral wall building materials and lime plaster, combined with natural linoleum floors as well as furniture and doors made of wood and acoustic ceilings made of cement-bonded wood wool panels, also guarantee a pleasant indoor climate.

Colour concept for better orientation

The generously designed rooms, some of which offer multifunctional use, as well as the wide play corridors offer plenty of space for both children and employees. A colour concept and lovingly designed signs with animal images by the artist duo Emrich Engerer help with orientation in the new building. The two group rooms on the ground floor are connected by a round staircase with four other group rooms on the upper floor. A children’s restaurant is located in the middle of the new building.

For optimum acoustics in day-to-day childcare

To reduce reverberation times in the rooms, some of the ceilings were fitted with cement-bonded wood wool panels, which significantly increase the sense of wellbeing in the daycare centre due to their acoustic properties. For example, the Troldtekt design solution “Curves” is used in the children’s restaurant, which also serves as a design element with its wavy lines and rounds off the overall concept perfectly.
